Species Composition…

There are 24 species of trees on the Lake View School grounds. Among these, large white oaks (Quercus alba) dominate the landscape. Most of these trees have stood for well over a hundred years; many have likely been around for two millennium. Other common trees on the grounds include Ash, Red Oak, White Mulberry, Black Cherry, Crabapple, and Boxelder.

Trees at Lake View Elementary…
  • Store 1.6 million pounds of Carbon (the combined weight of 70 school buses).
  • Intercept 452,000 gallons of storm water annually before it can reach the storm sewers (enough to fill an Olympic size swimming pool).
  • Remove 600 lbs of air pollutants each year (an estimate value of $1632).
  • Pull 105,000 lbs of carbon from the atmosphere annually (equal to the emissions generated by driving an average car around the earth 5 times).

Canopy Cover…

34% of the Lake View School grounds are covered by forest canopy. This figure is higher than the adjacent agricultural areas but lower than the residential neighborhoods surrounding the school.
